Dubai has been a warm and welcoming port city for centuries: Marco Polo described it as a bustling commercial center in the 13th century. Today it's famous for its ability to combine "The Best of East and West" - not surprising, perhaps, when you consider its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, within easy reach of Africa, the Middle East and the tropical islands of the Indian Ocean. Second largest of the seven members of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai differs from its fellows in the UAE in that oil revenues account for only a very small percentage of the country's income. For much of its existence the principal town, Dubai City, made its living from its location. It was - and continues to be - an important regional port of call for goods like pearls, gold and manufactured goods moving in to, out of and around Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

In a single day, the tourist can experience everything from rugged mountains and awe-inspiring sand dunes to sandy beaches and lush green parks, from dusty villages to luxurious residential districts and from ancient houses with wind towers to ultra-modern shopping malls.
Dubai is a shopper's paradise. The tiny emirate is a duty-free zone and during its March Shopping Festival, two million visitors arrive looking for discounts on gold, electronics, clothing, and Persian carpets.
And if that is not enough, why not Ski in the dessert? Yes snow ski.
