Argentina

Argentina, the second largest country in South America, is a land of dramatic natural attractions including three of South America’s “must see” scenic wonders:  powerful Iguassu Falls, the stunning alpine scenery of the Lake District and Bariloche, and astonishing Perito Moreno Glacier, which sheds huge blocks of ice that fall into the lakes below.  Its Patagonian landscapes are legendary for jagged mountains that stretch south to Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego; and for the wildlife of the Peninsula Valdez, a vital habitat for penguins and sea elephants, guanacos and rheas and whales.  Argentina’s northern landscapes feature vineyards, missions, pristine rainforests of Yacutinga Reserve and Andean deserts dotted with Indian villages and color-streaked canyons.  In central Argentina, Buenos Aires is home to passionate tango dancing and bustling night life as well as elegant boutiques, cafes and architecture reminiscent of Paris.  A short, day trip away are the great plains of the Pampas, where you can experience the way of life of the gauchos, Argentine cowboys.

Bolivia
Bolivia, land of ancient Aymaras, is in the geographical center of South America.  One of the least known and least developed countries on the continent, it is one of the most fascinating to visit.  Its little explored countryside has some of the last great tracts of wilderness remaining in the Americas, including the “Lost World” mesas of Noel Kempf Mercado National Park, home to virtually all of the major Amazon mammals and many birds found nowhere else. Here, too, the Tiwanaku ruins represent what may have been the oldest civilization in our hemisphere. Fabulous mountain cities, authentic Indian life, extraordinary landscapes such as the surreal Valley of the Moon near La Paz, make Bolivia an up and coming destination. Bolivia’s superlatives include Lake Titicaca, at 12,500 feet the highest navigable body of water on earth. Its unusual attractions include the Uyuni Salt Slats, home to tenacious forests of giant cacti, and blinding white salt flats, which cover an amazing 3,500-square miles.

The Pantanal
Arrive into Campo Grande and transfer to the wetlands of the Pantanal, a vast refuge for capybara, caiman, tapir, monkeys and some 600 species of birds including macaws, spoonbills, and jabirus.  Your lodge is set within a private ecological reserve, part of a working cattle ranch where the cows live side by side with caimans and wolves, tapirs, deer, and jaguars. Spend time exploring the diverse terrain in different ways.  Ride horseback through arboreal ranges and forests where wildlife abound.  Or go out in open vehicles in search of mammals, amphibians, and exotic birds; or after dark to view nocturnal species.  Boat trips explore the aquatic vegetation and beauty of the “carandazal” floating on transparent waters.  Treks on interpretive trails delve into the heart of the forest. All outings are guided by bilingual researchers and focus mainly on mammal and bird observation during the dry season, May through November.  The wet months, December through April, are best for bird and flora observation, when the rivers fan out into an ocean of green, and a breeding ground for water-loving flora.

Summer Skiing
Our summer is South America's winter and that means plenty of snow in the Andes of Chile and Argentina - and great ski resorts to give you all the powder rushes you could imagine!

Snows begin to fall in June and July, August and September are the months to ski. Both Chile and Argentina have ski resorts - there are three that are the most popular and provide the best internationally oriented facilities and services:

Bariloche is nested along the eastern slopes of the Andes and along the southern shoes of Lake Nahuel Huapi in one of Argentina's premier summer and winter resorts. This alpine style town has an abundance of boutiques, shops, pubs, tea houses, discos and restaurants. There are a variety of hotels, most within short walking distance of the main plaza.

Skiing in Bariloche can be combined easily with an All Argentine program or with a Lake District Crossing and a Chile programContact for more details

Estancia Arroyo Verde
The Estancia Arroyo Verde is located just an hour south of Bariloche in the Traful Valley on the northern side of the Traful River on 12,500 acres inside a Natural Reserve that is part of the Nahuel Huapi National Park. While the estancia is devoted to cattle-breeding and sheep-rearing, during their summer it is well known as a fly-fishing lodge and destination.

Your stay at Estancia Arroyo Verde includes transportation from Bariloche, all meals, open bar, laundry, full-time English speaking guides with transport for the different activities.

Activities include fly-fishing, horseback riding, trekking, lake excursions, and birdwatching.
